We have two aquaponics systems, and a third in build.
Over a few days some critters made it into the aquaponics shed roughed things up. First the bagged fish feed was shredded and thrown about, messy eater. The next night our friend chewed through hard plastic containers to get the remaining food. Finally, the beast came bag with indignance to smash some stacks of terracota pots and eat the kale out of the garden beds.
Lesson learned: Critter proof building, be diligent about closing up at night.
Trying 12 red crayfish in the sump / raft tank. Also got 3 of each snails and Chinese alge eaters for the fish tank.
A frozen 1/2 inch of ice around the system had frozen the door shut at the base. Both media beds were somehow still ebbing/flowing when I arrived at the scene but the sump water level was at 1/6th with the rest frozen underfoot. I can’t figure what failed, likely the string of hard freeze we’ve had in maryland.
We’ve been in a freeze for the past few days so i wanted to see how the fish are fairing in the snow covered greenhouse by dunking go pro in each tank.
There is a 100w heater in this tank, the fish are pretty afraid of the blink light on the camera.
Comets and Koi are chilling at the bottom in unheated system-2, Also afraid of the camera.
hoping to host wordpress plugin here https://github.com/jr5/WpArduponics.git
Built an enclosure for the sensor reader out of a chocolate box. Just need to install it. Currently capturing static data from my basement and displaying here.
Keep hearing about it. finally found someone to dumb it down for me @microponics:
My take away
- Grows in fish water
- May be fed back to fish
- Grows quickly
- Interacts well with effulant
Too Hot – The greenhouse is more of a shed style seed starter home. Many of the veggies either bolt or whither. A large exhaust fan on a timer seems to be working to curb the temps, but
Siphon not activating – I’m second guessing how well the siphon is working. I’ve felt confident in plumbing for the past 6+ months. Recently i’ve noticed the system sitting at an equilibrium flow with the water level down.
Not Enough Data – This goes hand in hand with the other problems. Some data logging elements in the system would give better visibility into the problems (Heat / water level)
